The first thing I have to ask myself is this–what do I care about? What is a preview of the upcoming high school season about? Back in the day, it was about state championships. Whose gonna win? Nowadays it seems more and more that people care a lot more about college scholarships. Who are the best players, whether their teams win or not? Well, I care more about the high school teams than about the college futures but, seriously, you kinda gotta consider both.
So for whatever that was worth. Here are the best Minnesota high school teams 2024-2025.
Class AAAA
1. Wayzata–Section 6 champion. Wayzata has been trying to get past Hopkins in Section 6 since before Paige Bueckers and Mara Braun, and it has always been with the same result. Now, can Sophie Hawkinson and Kate Amelotte get the Trojans to state? Well, maybe. Either way, the Section 6 champion will be favored to win the state title.
2. Maple Grove–Section 5 champion. Maple Grove has been stockpiling some of the state’s best talent for several years. Now, Jordan Ode is the #1 player in the class of 2025. But Wayzata and Hopkins are a little deeper and that’s just the way it is.
3. Hopkins. Nobody rated in the top 10 of the classes of 2025 or 2026. 3 top 10 sophomores, however, so they’ll be back.
4. Minnetonka–Section 2. The Skippers finally broke through against the Hopkins Royals last year, but 6-3 superstar guard Aaliyah Crump has decided to spend her senior season at Montverde Academy. Tonka has excellent talent but without Crump, it’s not quite #1 talent.
5. Lakeville North–Section 1
6. Eden Prairie
7. Prior Lake
8. St. Michael-Albertville–Section 8
9. Eastview–Section 3
10. Rosemount. Guard Amisha Ramlall is the (that is, my) #1 soph in the state.
Class AAA
1. DeLaSalle–Section 4 champion.
2. Benilde-St. Margaret’s–Section 6. Class AAA remains the private school tournament. DeLaSalle and Benilde have each won 4 AAA titles. Benilde beat De in 2024. DeLaSalle has more firepower this year with Aneisha Scott outside and Jordyn Johnson inside. Benilde learns how to play without Olivia Olson. But point guard Kendall McGee, who missed all of last season, is back. She is regarded as the #1 player in AAA.
3. Alexandria–Section 8. The best “small town team” in Minnesota with the best coach, Wendy Kohler. 6-2 forward Hadley Thul is rated #2 in AAA.
4. Orono
5. Monticello–Section 5. Led by a trio of juniors including Abby and Addison Ruda.
6. Mahtomedi
7. New Ulm–Section 2. Led by Brooklyn Lewis and her 21 ppg.
8. Hill-Murray
9. St. Anthony
10. Stewartville–Section 1. Led by 3 juniors Ella Theobald, Jayci Rath and Audrey Shindelar.
Class AA
1. Providence–Section 5 champion.
2. Minnehaha–Section 4 champion. Oops, another private school fiesta. Providence of course has the incredible Maddyn Greenway, now a junior, who scored 34 ppg a year ago and is rated the #1 junior in the state. Providence lost Ari Peterson to a transfer but returns plenty of supporting firepower. Minnehaha features the almost equally remarkable Addie Mack and her 32 ppg. She is rated the #2 senior, but her supporting cast is not quite as good as Greenway’s.
3. Crosby-Ironton–Sectino 7. And, now, C-I features the #2 junior in the state, Tori Oehrlein. Her line last year was 37 ppg-15 reb-7 ast-5 stl-3 blk. And she’s being joined this year by Regan Juenemann, a transfer from Duluth Marshall, where she scored 23 ppg.
4. Minnewaska–Section 3.
5. St. Crois Lutheran. Junior post Callie Oakland’s line last year was 17-13-3-2-2.
6. Sauk Centre–Section 6.
7. Proctor
8. Duluth Marshall–led by the state’s #1 freshman Chloe Johnson with a 28-11-9-4 line.
Class A
1. Goodhue–Section 1 champion. And, defending state champion. They return more than 50 ppg and have experience at every position. It is not unlikely that they will face Mountain Iron-Buhl in the state final again.
2. Mountain Iron-Buhl–Section 7.
3. Breckenridge–Section 6.
4. St. James–Section 3.
